Project Enters Advanced Stage with $40 Million Investment
Plans to establish a major pharmaceutical manufacturing plant by Med Aditus have reached an advanced stage, with construction expected to begin next to the Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) at the beginning of 2026. The $40 million project represents a significant partnership between Med Aditus, the County Government of Kisumu, and GLUK.
Focus on Affordable Medicine for Regional Health Needs
The manufacturing facility aims to produce subsidized, high-quality drugs for the Great Lakes Region and beyond, targeting an impressive annual production capacity of two billion tablets and capsules. The plant will address critical health needs by manufacturing drugs for:
Non-communicable diseases including cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and cancer
Infectious diseases such as HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis
Neglected tropical diseases
High-Level Collaboration and Funding
The project recently underwent a progress review attended by Dr. Dhiren R. Thakker, Ph.D., CEO of Med Aditus, and Prof. Bob Blouin, CEO of Med Aditus Foundation, accompanied by Prof. Khama Rogo, Head of the World Bank Group’s Health Africa Initiative.
The establishment is largely financed through Afreximbank’s intervention under the Bank’s Africa Health Security Investment Plan, an initiative specifically designed to strengthen the continent’s health product manufacturing capacity.
Significant Local Economic Impact
The pharmaceutical plant is expected to create hundreds of job opportunities for the local community, providing substantial economic benefits alongside improved healthcare access. The planning meeting was attended by County Government officers including Chief Officer for Health Dr. Ojwang’ Lusi, Chief Officer for Lands Victor Kanyaura, and Director of Medical Services Dr. Don Ogolla.
