In a strategic move to capture a larger share of the lucrative UK and European travel market, Kenya is leading a strong delegation to the 2025 World Travel Market (WTM) in London. The delegation, one of the largest at the event, aims to reposition the country as a multi-faceted, year-round destination.
Shifting the Narrative: Beyond the Safari
Led by Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, Kenya is actively shifting its global image. “We are showcasing how Kenya has evolved into a year-round, multi-dimensional destination that extends well beyond the traditional safari narrative,” Miano stated. The new strategy highlights emerging experiences in wellness, culture, and conservation, moving from a safari-only image to an experience-driven brand.
The UK Market: A Cornerstone for Growth
The United Kingdom is a critical pillar of Kenya’s tourism strategy, being its largest European market with 180,639 visitors in 2024. The country aims to build on this foundation, targeting 2.8 million international arrivals by the end of 2025. This ambition aligns with a broader continental goal to expand Africa’s share of the global tourism market, tapping into the £78.6 billion that British travellers spent on overseas trips in 2024.
Enhanced Air Connectivity as a Key Driver
A major boost to this growth strategy is the improved air connectivity between the two nations. Kenya Airways’ launch of direct flights to London Gatwick in July, complementing its existing Heathrow service, has increased the frequency to ten weekly flights. This enhanced access strengthens Kenya’s competitiveness and makes the destination more accessible to UK tourists.
Forging Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism
The WTM provides a vital platform for the Kenyan delegation, comprising over 30 travel trade professionals, to forge new partnerships. Allan Njoroge, Kenya Tourism Board Acting CEO, noted the event is an “unmatched platform for engagement with European trade partners.” The team aims to build on the momentum from the recent Magical Kenya Travel Expo, targeting demand for experiences that blend conservation, community, and culture.
This campaign in London underscores a significant continental shift, positioning Kenya and Africa as premier hubs for sustainable and experience-driven travel.
