A landmark milestone has been achieved in Kenya’s aviation sector. The Ministry of Roads and Transport, through the State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development, in collaboration with the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) , today hosted a Pre-Bid Conference for the proposed design, development, and modernization of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) .
The session brought together prospective bidders for an immersive engagement, providing a clear, on-the-ground understanding of the project scope, site conditions, and expectations.
Aviation: Kenya’s Economic Engine
Presiding over the meeting, Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Teresia Mbaika, underscored the urgency and strategic importance of the project. She revealed compelling figures that highlight aviation’s critical role in Kenya’s economy:
“Aviation contributes over KSh 1.2 trillion annually, supports 1.2 million jobs, and facilitates over KSh 4 trillion in tourism and trade. It connects us to more than 50 international destinations and fuels key sectors such as horticulture, manufacturing, and tourism. Investing in this project is investing in Kenya’s economic engine and unlocking sustainable growth for generations.”
KAA Leadership Reaffirms Commitment
Also in attendance was KAA leadership, led by Ag. Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Mohamud Gedi, who reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to delivering a world-class airport that meets future demand.
This milestone marks a significant step forward in the modernization of JKIA, setting the stage for a stronger, more connected, and globally competitive aviation sector.
