Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is one step closer to a major transformation. The ambitious project to design, develop, and modernize East Africa’s busiest aviation hub has gained significant momentum following two key events: a successful Pre-Bid conference and a comprehensive Pre-Bid Site Visit.

Hands-On Engagement for Prospective Bidders

Just one day after the Pre-Bid conference meeting, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) conducted a detailed site visit today, bringing together prospective bidders for an immersive, on-the-ground engagement. The exercise was supported by DAR Al-Handasah Consultants (DAR) , the project consultants, who guided participants through key technical aspects of the project.

The goal was clear: provide bidders with a practical understanding of the project scope, existing infrastructure, and the specific areas earmarked for development.

What Was Covered During the Site Visit

The comprehensive tour covered three main areas of the airport:

✈️ Airside Facilities

  • Proposed location for the new terminal building and site boundaries

  • Runway 06/24 – a key second runway

  • Aprons 1, 2, and 3

  • Taxiways A through M

  • Critical operational infrastructure: fire stations, airside power stations, and meteorological stations

🏢 Terminal Facilities

  • Passenger lounges across Terminals 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E, and T2

  • Baggage handling systems

🚗 Landside Facilities

  • Power substations and water storage systems

  • Parking facilities and access roads

  • Passenger screening yard

A Transformative Undertaking for Kenya

The JKIA modernization initiative is not just a construction project – it is a transformative undertaking aimed at:

  • Expanding capacity to handle growing passenger and cargo volumes

  • Enhancing passenger experience through modern facilities and efficient processes

  • Strengthening Kenya’s position as a leading aviation hub in Africa

As the bidding process moves forward, KAA has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a world-class airport that meets future demand and supports the country’s economic growth.
