In a significant move for the future of travel and trade in Eastern Africa, the State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development (SDAAD) held a strategic meeting with the World Bank to strengthen regional connectivity and champion sustainable air travel.

A Focus on Connectivity and Sustainable Skies

The high-level discussions focused on two key pillars:

  1. Strengthening multimodal transport connectivity and enhancing the resilience of strategic corridors throughout Eastern Africa.

  2. Advancing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Kenya with technical assistance from the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP).

High-Level Commitment to Strategic Goals

The meeting was chaired by the Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Ms. Teresia Mbaika, CBS, who reaffirmed the government’s firm commitment to these strategic initiatives. The World Bank delegation was led by Mr. Binyam Reja. Also in attendance was the Director General of the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Mr. Emile Arao, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the engagement.

Positioning Kenya as a Sustainable Aviation Leader

This collaboration reflects a strong partnership aimed at developing an integrated transport system and furthering Kenya’s leadership in sustainable aviation. Key efforts include promoting locally produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel and guiding infrastructure investments for long-term aviation growth.

The engagement aligns with Kenya’s broader strategy to position itself as a hub for SAF production and usage in Africa. This is supported by collaborations with international partners, innovative local SAF initiatives, and a policy environment designed to foster green aviation development.

Paving the Way for a Greener Future

The World Bank’s technical and financial support underscores the importance of resilient transport corridors and expanded aviation infrastructure as key pillars for both regional economic growth and environmental sustainability.

This meeting exemplifies Kenya’s proactive stance on aviation sustainability and regional connectivity, bolstered by high-level government commitment and collaborative international partnerships.

The World Bank team is in the country ahead of the 4th High-Level Workshop and 4th Meeting of the National Steering Committee (NSC) on accelerating the development and deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Kenya. This pivotal event is scheduled for November 25th to 27th, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
