Runway Upgrade in Focus: KAA Chairman Visits Kisumu International Airport

Kisumu International Airport (KIA) is gearing up for enhanced regional connectivity as significant infrastructure upgrades continue. Hon. Caleb Kositany, Chairman of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board, recently conducted an oversight visit to assess the ongoing runway widening project—a flagship initiative set to elevate KIA’s operational capacity and safety standards.

A Strategic Upgrade to Code 4E Standards

The centerpiece of the development is the upgrade of a 300-meter runway section to Code 4E standards, which includes:

  • Widening the runway from 45 meters to 60 meters

  • Adding 7.5-meter shoulders on both sides

  • Laying asphalt concrete with new pavement markings

  • Reinstating runway edge lights

This upgrade will enable the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, enhance safety during takeoff and landing, and support increased air traffic in the region.

Tour of Key Infrastructure

During his visit, Hon. Kositany inspected several strategic sites that will contribute to KIA’s growth as a regional aviation hub:

  • The proposed runway extension area

  • A prospective hangar development site

  • The recently commissioned KCAA air traffic control tower

  • The airport fire station

These facilities are essential to boosting safety, operational efficiency, and service capacity at the airport.

Commitment to Team and Environment

Hosted by Felix Wanga, KAA Regional Airport Manager for the Western Region, the Chairman also engaged with airport staff and participated in a tree-planting exercise on-site. This gesture reflects KAA’s dedication to staff welfare, teamwork, and environmental sustainability as part of KIA’s transformation into a premier regional gateway.

Positioning Kisumu as a Regional Gateway

These developments underscore Kisumu International Airport’s strategic role in serving Western Kenya and the wider Great Lakes region. With enhanced infrastructure and a focus on sustainable growth, KIA is well-positioned to support increased trade, tourism, and regional connectivity.
