Kisumu Rising: A Look at Key Achievements Under Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s Leadership

For travelers and investors, understanding a region’s development is key to appreciating its current vibrancy and future potential. Kisumu County, under the leadership of Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, has made significant strides across several sectors, shaping it into a more resilient, beautiful, and innovative destination. Here are some of the standout achievements that are transforming the Lake Region.

1. Pioneering Universal Health Coverage

Kisumu successfully scaled “Kisumu Care,” its county-led universal health insurance program. It has become one of Kenya’s most successful models, achieving high enrollment rates and providing comprehensive outpatient and inpatient cover to residents, setting a benchmark for healthcare accessibility.

2. Transforming Urban Spaces & Boosting Tourism

A major focus has been the beautification and redevelopment of public spaces to enhance the city’s appeal. Key projects include the redevelopment of the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground and the creation of the iconic Kisumu Waterfront. These initiatives have significantly boosted local tourism, recreation, and the overall aesthetic of the city.

3. Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure

There has been a substantial investment in healthcare infrastructure. This includes the major expansion and equipping of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) and the upgrade of numerous primary healthcare facilities across the county, bringing quality medical services closer to the people.

4. Promoting Aquaculture & Economic Diversification

Recognizing Lake Victoria’s potential, the county has promoted aquaculture as a key economic pillar. Initiatives include distributing fish ponds and fingerlings to farmers and establishing a fish feed factory, thereby strengthening the entire aquaculture value chain and creating new livelihoods.

5. Fostering a Digital Innovation Hub

To drive the future economy, the Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) Innovation Centre was established in Kisumu. This hub is designed to foster ICT talent, attract tech startups, and position the region as a growing player in Kenya’s digital economy.

6. Championing Talent & Cultural Development

Kisumu’s vibrant arts scene has received consistent support, cementing its status as a cultural hub. The county actively backs local artists, filmmakers, and major annual events like the Kisumu International Fashion Week and Kisumu Art Fest.

According to a poll by Politrack Africa dated 8th December 2025, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o had an approval rating of 56.4%.
