Kisumu Port Welcomes MV Mpungu in a Major Boost for Regional Trade

Kisumu Port is riding a new wave of maritime activity, with cargo volumes and vessel traffic steadily climbing. This growth was highlighted this week by the historic maiden call of the MV Mpungu, a 96-meter cargo vessel from Uganda, marking a significant milestone for East Africa’s inland shipping corridor.

Operated by Grindrod Logistics Africa under East Africa Marine Transport (EAMT), the vessel was welcomed in a brief ceremony attended by Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) officials and representatives from Express Shipping & Logistics (EA) Ltd.

A Strategic Hub for Lake Trade

Mr. Patrick Makau, Kisumu Port Manager for Cargo Services, welcomed the ship’s captain and crew, emphasizing the port’s commitment to supporting regional trade through ongoing infrastructure upgrades.

“We are proud to host MV Mpungu and appreciate the shipping line for choosing Kisumu Port,” said Makau. “Our goal is to meet rising demand and unlock new opportunities across the Lake Victoria region.”

The numbers reflect this upward trend: cargo throughput has grown from 281,000 metric tons last year to 324,000 metric tons currently, with a projection of reaching 400,000 metric tons by year-end.

Strengthening Regional Connections

Capt. Obedi Nkongoki, the ship’s master, was presented with a certificate and commemorative plaque to mark the vessel’s inaugural visit. He praised Kisumu’s strategic role, stating, “Kisumu is a key hub for unlocking trade potential in the region. We look forward to making regular calls here and to other ports around the lake.”

Roney Seema, Director of EAMT, reaffirmed the company’s commitment: “We are excited by the special welcome and ready to continue investing in cargo transport.”

Modern Vessel, Enhanced Capacity

The MV Mpungu brings both capacity and efficiency—boasting a 1,000-ton cargo capacity and a roll-on/roll-off design that simplifies the movement of trucks and trailers.

With six active vessels now operating from Kisumu Port, the facility is fast establishing itself as a central player in East Africa’s evolving maritime economy—bridging markets, boosting trade, and opening fresh pathways for growth and connectivity.
