Kisumu – Great news for Kisumu County! Our region has officially become a pioneer in Kenya’s HIV prevention revolution, being among the first counties to roll out two groundbreaking long-acting injectable options: Cabotegravir (CAB-LA) and Lenacapavir.

Say goodbye to daily pills! These high-tech injections provide long-lasting protection, making it easier than ever to stay safe and healthy. This Phase One rollout will be available across 10 selected health facilities in Kisumu County, following the launch of the National HIV Prevention Operational Plan 2025/2026.

💉 The New Options: How Often?

OptionFrequencyStatus
Cabotegravir (CAB-LA)Once every 2 months (6 injections per year)Already recommended by WHO, part of current rollout
LenacapavirOnce every 6 months (2 injections per year)Newest option, recently registered in Kenya (January 2026)

📋 What You Need to Know About Both Options

✅ For HIV-Negative Individuals Only: Both injections are strictly for people who do not have HIV but are at ongoing risk of infection.

✅ NOT a Vaccine or Cure: These injections prevent HIV but do not treat existing HIV or protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

✅ Safe & Approved:

  • Lenacapavir was approved by the US FDA in June 2025, endorsed by WHO in July 2025, and registered in Kenya by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board in January 2026.

  • Cabotegravir (CAB-LA) is already a WHO-recommended HIV prevention tool.

✅ Why Long-Acting? These injections offer a discreet, convenient alternative to daily pills—helping overcome pill fatigue, stigma, and adherence challenges.

✅ Part of Combination Prevention: These new options complement existing tools like daily oral PrEP, the dapivirine vaginal ring, condoms, and male circumcision.
