The County Government of Kisumu, through its City Department, has strongly condemned an incident in which a group of individuals armed with pangas, rungus, and other crude weapons stormed a stakeholders’ meeting and attacked participants.
Incident Details
The attack occurred during a stakeholder’s meeting convened at the Kisumu Social Hall pursuant to the ongoing Court-Annexed Mediation Process on the operationalization of the Nyamasaria-Mowlem Satellite Bus Park.
According to the Directorate of Communications and Corporate Affairs, the meeting brought together representatives from:
Stakeholder Group
---
County Government of Kisumu
County Security Team
Kisumu Bus Park Transport Company
Kisumu Tuk Tuk Association
Bus Park Kiosk Owners
Hawkers
Mowlem and Nyamasaria Communities
“The discussions were constructive and culminated in an agreement to establish a Joint Committee to guide the operationalization of the satellite bus park” – County Government of Kisumu, Directorate of Communications and Corporate Affairs
Armed Attack and Theft
The armed gangs vandalized property and robbed several participants, including students, of their mobile phones, laptops, and other belongings.
Preliminary information and the circumstances surrounding the incident strongly suggest that the attack specifically targeted the City Manager, Mr. Abala Wanga, and was intended to disrupt the ongoing mediation process.
Swift Intervention
The County Government commended its Inspectorate Officers and the National Police Service for their swift intervention, which prevented further harm and restored order.
The County Government further called upon the National Police Service and other security agencies to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that all those responsible – including any individuals who planned, financed, or incited the attack – are brought to book.
Commitment to Peaceful Engagement
“The City of Kisumu remains firmly committed to the mediation process and to engage all stakeholders peacefully in pursuit of lasting and lawful solutions for the benefit of our residents”
– County Government of Kisumu, Directorate of Communications and Corporate Affairs
The County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful stakeholder engagement and the rule of law, despite this setback.
