Kenyan Aviation Workers Issue Strike Notice; KCAA Assures Flights Unaffected

Nairobi – February 10, 2026 – Tensions have surfaced in Kenya’s aviation sector after the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) issued a seven-day strike notice, potentially threatening operations at key airports, including the continent’s major hub, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. However, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has swiftly moved to reassure the public that all flights and services remain undisrupted as dialogue continues.

✈️ Strike Notice Officially Served

In a letter dated February 9, 2026, KAWU formally notified KCAA that “all unionisable employees… shall go on strike after the expiry of seven days,” setting a potential start date of Monday, February 16.

The union’s grievances center on:

  • The failure to conclude a long-pending collective bargaining agreement (CBA), with disputes reportedly dating back to 2015.

  • Delayed remittance of union dues.

  • Concerns over contract workers’ rights, alleging discrimination in benefits and recognition compared to permanent staff.

The union has warned that without a comprehensive resolution, industrial action could paralyse air traffic operations across the country.

🛬 KCAA’s Response: Dialogue in Motion

In a statement released on February 10, KCAA confirmed receipt of the strike notice and emphasized its commitment to resolving the matter through lawful channels.

“The Authority has carefully reviewed the notice in line with the Constitution, the Labour Relations Act, 2007, and applicable Government labour relations policies,” KCAA stated. It further assured stakeholders that it is actively engaging the union through established consultative frameworks to resolve the issues “amicably and in good faith.”

Crucially, KCAA emphasized that all aviation operations continue normally, with no disruption to safety or services. “The Authority assures airlines, passengers, industry partners, and the public that there is no disruption to aviation operations, and all services continue to be delivered as normal.”

⚖️ Government’s Commitment to Continuity

The government, through KCAA, has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the continuity of critical aviation safety and operational services, regardless of ongoing labour discussions. Authorities stressed that dialogue is the preferred and lawful path to resolving such disputes and that engagements are already underway.
