Kenya Remains Ebola-Free as Government Intensifies Preparedness Measures

Source: Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has assured Kenyans and international visitors that the country remains free of any confirmed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case, even as authorities heighten surveillance and preparedness measures following outbreaks in neighbouring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo .

Kenya’s Position as a Regional Hub

Speaking in a press statement on 25th June 2026, Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale, EGH, acknowledged that Kenya remains at high risk of receiving an imported case due to its position as a major regional transport and travel hub with strong connections to neighbouring countries .

“First and foremost, I wish to assure all Kenyans that Kenya has not reported any confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease.” – Hon. Aden Duale, Cabinet Secretary for Health

Proactive Measures Underway

The Ministry of Health, through the Kenya National Public Health Institute (KNPHI) , activated the national Ebola Incident Management System on 20th May 2026 and has since intensified preparedness activities across the country .

Screening Figures

As of 25th June 2026, Kenya has screened more than 140,000 travellers arriving from affected areas and investigated over 100 alerts – all of which have tested negative for Ebola .

Quarantine Facilities: Preparedness, Not Panic

The Ministry has clarified that the establishment of quarantine and isolation facilities is a preparedness measure and does not mean Kenya has an Ebola case.

“Just as a country prepares fire engines before a fire occurs, public health authorities must prepare isolation and quarantine facilities before an outbreak occurs.” – Ministry of Health

These facilities enable health authorities to:

  • ✅ Quickly contain any suspected case

  • ✅ Protect healthcare workers

  • ✅ Prevent further spread into the community should a case be detected

“Preparedness is always cheaper than responding to a full outbreak.” – Ministry of Health

Previous Ebola outbreaks in Africa resulted in billions of dollars in economic losses due to disruptions in travel, trade, tourism, and investment. Early preparedness helps protect lives, livelihoods, and the economy .
