NAIROBI, KENYA — Kenya has cemented its position as a global leader in sustainable tourism by spearheading the historic Nairobi Declaration during the Fourth Global Tourism Resilience Day Conference and Expo, held in the capital from 16th to 18th February 2026. The landmark declaration sets a new global standard for building a resilient, inclusive, and future-ready tourism sector worldwide.
🌍 A Defining Moment for Global Tourism
The conference, which brought together delegates from across the globe, was closed by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, who emphasized Kenya’s unwavering commitment to transforming the tourism sector into a model of resilience and adaptability.
“Our priority must be to create systems that can withstand disruption, respond swiftly, and recover sustainably,” Dr. Mudavadi stated, acknowledging tourism’s vulnerability to pandemics, climate change, geopolitical pressures, and economic shocks, while celebrating the sector’s remarkable capacity to adapt and drive economic growth.
Dr. Mudavadi highlighted Kenya’s strategic pivot beyond traditional wildlife safaris, showcasing the country’s diversified tourism offerings including cultural tourism, ecotourism, sports tourism, gastronomy, and digital innovations. He stressed the critical role of public-private partnerships, sustainability standards, and inclusive policies that empower local communities, youth, women-led enterprises, and small businesses to fully participate in tourism growth.
“Tourism is not only a driver of national growth—it is a bridge connecting people, cultures, and nations. Through partnerships, innovation, and inclusion, we ensure that tourism remains a mainstay of economic recovery and sustainable development,” he added.
📈 Kenya’s Remarkable Tourism Performance
Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Rebecca Miano, delivered impressive statistics that underscore Kenya’s tourism resurgence:
| Metric | Performance |
|---|---|
| Revenue 2023 | KES 268 billion |
| Revenue 2024 | KES 452 billion (estimated) |
| International Arrivals | 2.4 million |
| Target by End of 2025 | 5.5 million arrivals |
CS Miano described the Nairobi Declaration as a shared roadmap embedding resilience, inclusivity, and sustainability across all tourism policies and investments, ensuring that Kenya’s tourism growth benefits all stakeholders.
🤝 Global Partnerships Strengthened
Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, founder of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Center, emphasized the transformative power of technology, artificial intelligence, and digital innovation in shaping tourism’s future. He announced the launch of the book Destination Reputational Resilience, designed to counter misinformation and safeguard the integrity of destinations worldwide.
Minister Bartlett also reaffirmed the renewed Kenya–Jamaica Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) , originally signed in 2019. This partnership has enabled the establishment of the Global Tourism Resilience Center at Kenyatta University, serving as a regional hub for research, training, and policy development with reach extending to Europe and the United States.
South Sudan’s Minister of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism, Hon. Danny Jok Chagor, stressed the importance of regional cooperation, emphasizing that tourism resilience must deliver tangible benefits to local communities.
“Resilience is meaningful only when ordinary citizens have decent jobs, can make decisions for their families, and access the benefits of tourism,” he said, citing South Sudan’s rich wildlife resources as an opportunity for cross-border collaboration with Kenya.
