The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board and Senior Management have embarked on a pivotal two-day tour of key regional airstrips, underscoring a strategic push to expand Kenya’s aviation network and fuel local economic growth. Day One of the tour provided a firsthand look at transformative developments at Suneka and Kabunde Airstrips.
✈️ Suneka Airstrip: A Catalyst for Kisii’s Growth
The delegation, accompanied by Kisii County Governor H.E. Simba Arati, visited Suneka Airstrip where strategic upgrades are on the horizon. KAA Board Chair, Hon. Caleb Kositany, announced that rehabilitation plans are advancing through procurement, with construction slated to begin in the coming weeks.
This development is poised to enhance regional access significantly, serving as a vital engine for trade, agribusiness, and private investment throughout Kisii County and its environs.
🌊 Kabunde Airstrip: Homa Bay’s Emerging Aviation Hub
The tour proceeded to Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County, hosted by CEC for Roads, Public Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Hon. Danish Onyango. The team inspected critical infrastructure, including:
The newly completed 1.4km runway extension
Ongoing apron construction works
The proposed site for a new passenger terminal
Designed with a future capacity for up to one million passengers annually, Kabunde Airstrip is rapidly emerging as a strategic hub positioned to boost tourism, spur business development, and streamline regional logistics for the wider Lake Region.
🔗 Commitment to Regional Prosperity
Day One of the aerodrome tour powerfully demonstrates KAA’s dedicated mission to extend safe, efficient, and modern air connectivity to Kenya’s vibrant growth corridors. These investments are foundational to linking communities, empowering businesses, and integrating regional economies into the national and continental aviation framework.
