Here at Afrivibe Rentals, we believe that the beauty of Kisumu is its greatest asset. That’s why we were thrilled to see our community come together for a vital environmental cause right at our doorstep.
Last Friday, the scenic Dunga Beach was the site of a major conservation drive, led by Equity Bank in partnership with local residents, conservation groups, and government agencies. The initiative was a direct response to recent reports of fish deaths in Lake Victoria, linked to pollution and decreasing oxygen levels.
A Community United for Change
The clean-up, part of this year’s Mazingira Day celebrations, saw a powerful collaboration between the Dunga Beach Management Unit (BMU), the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI), and various youth and women’s groups.
Javan Odera, Branch Manager of Equity Bank Kisumu Mega Plaza, captured the spirit of the day, stating, “The lake is visibly polluted, and we must all work together to make it habitable for both fish and people.” He emphasized that the initiative reflects a deep commitment to community welfare and sustainable livelihoods for lakefront communities.
Targeting the Source of the Problem
Silas Awiti, Secretary General of the BMU, highlighted that the clean-up focused not just on the beach, but also on the river mouth, a key entry point for pollutants carried from inland. Scientists from KMFRI were also on hand, blending research with community action to pinpoint pollution sources and help prevent future ecological damage.
A key takeaway from the event was the emphasis on involving youth in conservation efforts, championing it as a way to foster civic responsibility and protect the future of local livelihoods.
