In a moment of profound national significance, Kisumu International Airport (KIA) this morning served as the setting for a historic and solemn ceremony, receiving Military Aircraft ENIGMA01 carrying the remains of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, E.G.H.
The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) accorded the aircraft a rare and dignified Water Cannon Salute—a ceremonial gesture in aviation reserved for moments of great importance. This tribute at KIA followed an identical honour at JKIA on Thursday. Traditionally, this salute marks milestone events such as the retirement of senior pilots, the launch of a new route, or the arrival of a distinguished figure. This moment marks the first time such an honour has been bestowed in Kenya for a fallen leader.
The reception was made possible through the close collaboration of KAA with other government agencies. Key officials in attendance included Ag. Managing Director Dr. Mohamud Gedi, GM Security Services Mr. Joseph Okumu, GM Operations and Safety Dr. Simon Peter, and Regional Airport Manager Mr. Felix Wanga.
This dignified event at our home airport preceded the public viewing of the late leader’s body at Mamboleo Stadium. The operation underscores KAA’s pivotal role in managing key state events and the collective effort to honour a visionary statesman who shaped Kenya’s democracy and unity.
