Somalia Airlines Soars Again: A Phoenix Rising After 30 Years

After a 30-year hiatus, Somalia Airlines – once known as the ‘White Star’ – is preparing to reclaim its place in the skies. The national carrier, which ceased operations in 1991 amid the collapse of President Siad Barre’s government, is set to relaunch with two newly acquired Airbus A320 aircraft, marking a historic milestone in Somalia’s recovery.

A Symbol of Resilience & Renewal

Somalia’s Transport Minister, Mohamed Farah, hailed the revival as more than just a return to aviation—it’s a testament to the nation’s resilience. “This isn’t just about two new Airbus A320s; it’s a powerful symbol of our journey of rebuilding and renewed national pride,” he declared.

The airline will initially operate domestic and regional routes, with plans to expand internationally as three more aircraft join the fleet in the near future. “This is just the beginning,” Farah emphasized. “We’ll acquire more planes to compete globally and elevate Somalia’s profile.”

Connecting the Somali Diaspora & Boosting the Economy

For Somalia’s vast diaspora, the return of a national carrier means easier, direct travel – reuniting families and strengthening business ties. “Our people travel frequently, and now they’ll fly with their own airline, owned by the Somali people,” Farah added proudly.

The relaunch aligns with broader efforts to rebuild Somalia’s infrastructure. Just last month, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud inaugurated the New Mogadishu Airport, designed to meet global aviation standards and reduce congestion at Aden Adde International Airport.

A New Era for Somali Aviation

Somalia’s aviation sector has been steadily regaining autonomy:

  • 2018: Regained full control of its airspace from ICAO.

  • 2025: Joined CASSOA, the East African Community’s aviation safety body, signaling commitment to international standards.

The return of Somalia Airlines isn’t just about flights—it’s about restoring pride, connectivity, and economic growth. As Farah put it: “We are so happy for this new beginning.”
