Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH): A Century of Healthcare Excellence in Kisumu

Formerly known as The New Nyanza Provincial General Hospital, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching & Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) stands as a healthcare institution with a remarkable history spanning more than a century. Originally established in the early 1900s to serve health needs in the port town of Kisumu, the hospital has evolved into a major referral facility serving County, Sub-county, and private hospitals across more than 10 counties in Western Kenya, catering to a population of over 10 million people.

Historical Significance:

JOOTRH’s inception was driven by the high prevalence of malaria and other diseases in the former Port Florence (now Kisumu). The colonial era’s racial segregation led to the establishment of Victoria Hospital in 1932 exclusively for the white population, while JOOTRH served the black community. After Kenya’s independence, Victoria Hospital was transferred to the Catholic Church and later reverted to the government, now serving as the amenity wing of JOOTRH.

Modern Healthcare Services:

Commissioned in 1969, JOOTRH has undergone significant development with support from both national and county governments. The hospital now offers comprehensive medical services including:
